Franklin Leonard Stone was born in Vermont in 1812. He lived for several years in Illinois before moving to the Gallatin Valley of southwestern Montana, where he farmed, raised cattle, and taught school. Stone served as Gallatin County's first superintendent of schools. Sarah Barber, his wife, was a native of Illinois. Stone died near Old Gallatin, Montana, in 1884. Harriette Cushman was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on December 6, 1890. She grew up in New York, attended Mt. Holyoke College, and obtained her degree in chemistry and bacteriology from Cornell University in 1914. She later earned a special certificate in poultry husbandry from Rutgers. In 1849 Franklin, with his younger brother Hiram, went to California where they participated in the gold rush.
